We are currently raising two breeds of dairy goats at Cardinal Farms. The first breed is purebred registered Mini-Nubian goats, a cross between standard Nubians and Nigerian dwarf.  They have a friendly temperament and do well in the cold and the heat. The cross with the Nigerian dwarf results in milk with a high butterfat content that is great for cheese and soap.  Our kids are dam-raised but handled from birth resulting in a friendly animal that is easy to handle. All of our offspring are F7 or higher and our lines carry a significant amount of Genoa Meadow genetics.

We also began a British Guernsey dairy goat breed-up program in 2019. We breed in the fall for spring kids in April/May. Click here for more information on this breed that is new to the USA but is well-known in England for its sweet temperament, gorgeous coat and delicious milk!

Pigs.

Grass-fed, pasture-raised.

We are proud to be one of a growing number of farmers raising grass-fed and pastured-raised pigs. All of our stock are Idaho Pasture Pigs (IPPs), a cross between the heritage breeds of KuneKune, Berkshire and Duroc. They are raised on 90% grass and other forages and supplemented with non-GMO, mineral-rich grains. They live on pasture and in the forest their whole lives in groups providing healthy living conditions with lots of room to roam and be pigs. Click here to learn more about this newer cross-breed developed for its grazing ability, docile temperament and delicious meat.

We offer weaned feeder pigs and breeding stock IPPs. Email us to be placed on a waiting list. Our pork cuts are available at the South Lyon Farmer’s Market from June-Oct. We also offer 1/2 and whole hogs for those who would like to save by buying in bulk and choose their own cuts. Deposits on 1/2 and whole hogs can be made through our online store. We also have periodic online pork sales for our email subscribers. Subscribe below!

Poultry.

Free Range

Our hens are our co-farmers helping us to enrich the soil by moving daily across the pastures in their chicken tractor coop. They compost the manure provided by the livestock while eating up the bugs and grass - the best food nature has to offer. We supplement their free-ranging with high-quality non-GMO grain, food scraps and sunflower seeds. Hens lay an average of one egg per day which requires a tremendous amount of nutrients and energy. The excellent care and feed we give our ladies provides them with a high-quality of life and in return they lay delicious and nutritious eggs. Our multi-colored eggs are available at our booth at the South Lyon Farmer’s Market from June through October and also to members of the Local Food Club. There is nothing like a farm fresh egg to start your day!

Our flocks of 60 laying hens is made up of Novogens, Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, Salmon Faverolles, Whiting True Blues, Black Australorps, and Welsummers.
